Beau of The Fifth Column - JENerational Change #2

Beau is not your typical leftist commentator. In fact, his appeal lies in his ability to function as a bridge between demographics and populations that would ordinarily have nothing to do with each other in the modern political landscape. Beau was a former independent military contractor as well as an ex-tactical training instructor for police departments. He brings a unique perspective on criminal justice issues, including the police protocols deployed against civilians this summer during the civil rights protests following the murder of George Floyd.

With his long beard and southern aesthetic, Beau didn’t exactly think his reporting would catch fire in his own backyard. Hailing from the Florida panhandle, Beau did not think his journalism would become popular in northwestern Florida given that it is a traditionally conservative part of the state. However, Beau is living proof that writing off these rural areas is a foolish mistake. His takes on everything from the daily news to gun control have amassed him a sizable audience. Beau’s takes are the much-needed cure rural folks have been looking for to combat the constant drivel coming out of conservative outlets such as Fox News or Breitbart. Better yet, the news is delivered by a familiar face, not by a millionaire elitist who’d raise their nose up at folks in the country.

Jen and Beau tackle what has largely been the topic of conversation over the past year: Who do we vote for as progressives? As we all know, neither of the major party candidates elicit any excitement from progressives. Aside from voting third party, the question becomes: who would we rather fight in order to move the country left? In this case, both Jen and Beau agree that if they had a choice, they would both fight Biden for four years rather than let Trump continue in his post. Although Biden does not inspire confidence, there are several reasons for this. First, Trump has not formally agreed to a peaceful transition of power. This should be one of the major dealbreakers for anybody still on the border between voting Biden or not voting at all. This small first dip into authoritarianism should be rightfully condemned and voted out by a resounding margin. Secondly, a Biden landslide will drive back Trump’s following into obscurity. A landslide win for Biden would signal to Trump’s base that his ideas are not sustainable, and many would likely walk back their rhetoric. Third and final point is that short of accelerationism, there is no path forward for progressives under a Trump administration. At the very least Biden has shown throughout his career that he bows to public pressure, thus making him a better adversary. Progressives have a shot at holding Biden’s feet to the fire and might get some progressive legislation passed. If progressives aren’t aggressive in their approach, then Biden will surely lull the public back to not caring about politics, which would seriously derail the progressive movement and potentially hurt the Democratic Party in the midterms.

Beau also made some interesting predictions regarding election related violence. Beau predicts that if Trump doesn’t lose the election by a landslide, then his base would almost certainly contest the results. Other predictions include short bursts of violence but stopping short of a full coup attempt if Trump loses and contests the validity of the election. Regardless of who wins, both Jen and Beau believe it is of the utmost importance to keep supporting progressive candidates. What a progressive candidate in Florida looks like might be different than what a progressive candidate in Colorado looks like. We have many regions of diverse people, so a one size fits all progressive candidate for congress is nearly impossible. At the end of the day the progressive candidate must be a reflection of the people. that he or she serves. The basic tenets however must remain the same in order to change how campaigns are ran in this country. Candidates must pledge to reject corporate money, they must not be beholden to their party establishment, at the end of the day candidates must want to represent the people and not special interests.

Finally, Beau and Jen tackle an issue near and dear to many of Beau’s listeners: gun control. Gun control is a controversial topic for much of the country, but while there are extreme views on both sides of the aisle there is something that just won’t work and that is banning guns outright. Mathematically there are around 360 million people in the United States and 420 million guns. So, this outright ban would not only fail to meet its purpose, but it would also just cause necessary unrest from the right. However, an attempt at actual gun reform and regulation is not only a commonsense alternative to banning but it is also a move that would face much less resistance from both the right wing and actual gun owners. The NRA originally started to cater to gun owners but over the years it has shifted to cater almost exclusively to gun manufacturers and this has left them at a loss of credibility. Therefore, many gun owners don’t put much stock into the NRA and would actually welcome common sense gun reform.

In short, Beau believes that generational change means continuing the change in what we expect from those seeking public office. To make it standard for candidates to reject corporate money, reject special interests, and to reject being just another cog in the machine of the party establishment. This does not mean just the democrats, as Beau stated you can be a conservative and still put people at the forefront of your policy. While this hasn’t been showcased in the last few years it is not impossible and that would signal a shift into generational change.
